Buddy's Legacy

One Year Anniversary

9 Month Update

6 Month Update

Posted 7th April 2024

In the previous update, just after Christmas we helped Pluto, who was found to have Leishmaniasis and Tick Fever. However, after we helped him that time he didn't realise he could ask us again for his medication, and his human couldn't afford to buy it, so he went without it for a few days. As soon as I discovered this, I told his human that she certainly could come back and we could help Pluto with his medication, so we will be helping with that until Pluto's Mum can manage it. So hopefully Pluto won't have to manage without it again. 🙂

Also in the last update, just before the New Year, the big beautiful K had a nasty break to her leg. It was very problematic, and there were open wounds in her leg which needed to heal before the bone doctor could help. So we were awaiting information on the operation, but as K was going in almost daily for her dressing change, and the leg was being held in place by the dressings, while the flesh wounds were healing, the bone started to fuse. So, for now, K has a limp, and a boney lump where the break is calcified, and she is being monitored, but there is a good chance she may be able to escape the operation, as long as she continues to heal.

Dudda again from the last update, he had herniated discs and was very poorly. We were very worried about him, but just had an update recently. His human said the following ‘He already walks alone, eats drinks and goes out on the street 😃. He's still a little drunk, as we say, but otherwise he's fine. Thank you for everything, for your words of care and help at the vet.'

So that was a huge boost as we worried that he may not have survived his condition. Now we know he has some future to look forward to with his family!

A lot of this update will be us donating an amount towards operations, as we don't have sufficient funds to pay the whole amount, which still leaves owners struggling, begging friends to loan them money and consequently ending up in debt. I wish we get to a place, with regular donations from those who can spare a few euros, that we can fully pay for operations. But for now we are helping, and that is what we are here to do. 🙂

We are very sad to say Freddy wasn't strong enough to withstand his illness, and despite our help and his human loving him so much, he passed over to Rainbow Bridge. 🙁

Molly was still unwell despite her medication, so we helped her again by paying the vets bill and medication cost of €48.70 to further help her return to full health.

Bob and Colt also have cats in their family, and one of these was seriously unwell over the New Year and needed an emergency operation. So a private payment of €190 was made for the emergency operation, then there was €139 outstanding, and the overall agreement from the members of Buddy's Legacy was that we would settle this as the family had no conditions to do it.

The colony of stray cats in Estoi popped into our association and asked for help with food costs. This is not usually something Buddy's Legacy does, but I agreed to put the question to the members and give them the chance to decide, and happily some money was donated for the cats. Enjoy the food little cats! 🙂

We got very busy as 3 poor dogs needed help at the same time, and here are the updates on them:

Ceguetas needed an operation on a tumour he had in his jaw, and needed €200 to make the operation, so we paid that, and wish him well.

Also Bibi was very unwell, and had a lot of tests and investigations all costing more than his owner could afford, so we offered help. However, sadly poor Bibi was too unwell and he went to Rainbow Bridge. 🙁 His owner's friend loaned her the cost of the vets bill. This made it impossible for us to help as we only pay vets, not individuals. Sadly we couldn't help further.

Then poor Pretinho needed our help. He was hit by a car and had a badly broken hip, which needed surgery. His owner couldn't afford the cost so we helped, and paid €350 to the vet on the day of his operation.

This was all in January, and we had donations of €640.89 and it was a busy month with €1046.22 payments so a deficit of €405.33 🙁

Scooby's mum told me that little Scooby was very unwell, vomiting and not eating, and they did an x-ray and found items in his tummy that shouldn't be there. So they operated and found metal inside of him. Most of the bill was paid, although it was a struggle to do it, and there were 2 bills of €50 each which there just wasn't enough money for. So thanks to some very kind donations we took care of that, and Scooby is much better. Don't eat metal Scooby, it is bad for you and bad for your Mum's finances! 🙂

We then saw poor Nàvii who needed an operation, as he was born with Liver issues, His poor owner had managed to pay for Exams, and Medications and Hospitalisation, but she couldn't afford the 600/700 for his operation, so she asked us and our amazing group members for help! Nobody was certain exactly how much this would cost, so I agreed €300 for him, and the operation was booked. Good luck Nàvii, we hope you feel better soon. 🙂

Nàvii has an update since his treatment. It's been a month, he had an ultrasound and tests and the liver is responding well but everything is still very normal. 🙂

Poor Bibi's owner came forward to me and asked if we could pay for Bibi to be cremated. Now we haven't done this before, and it is unusual for us, but as we ended up unable to pay the vets debt, because it wasn't owed to the vet, it was owed to the owners friend who paid it, we felt the right thing to do in this case was to pay the €170 for this. It isn't normal for us, but we wanted to help poor Bibi go back home to his owner who loved him so much. 🙁

Sadly Pretinho, who had the broken hip, was found also to have a ruptured hernia. The operation was done in a timely fashion, but the cost for this was around €500, impossible for his owner to find, and she has been though so much with him I wanted to help him further, so we donated €300 towards this. I am very sad to share with you that the operation showed that things were worse than initially thought, and poor Pretinho didn't make it. 🙁

We have another little dog called Mel who had eaten some clothing! She needed it surgically removed, and her owner loves her so much she spent all of her money on the original operation, and she doesn't have work. Unfortunately the internal sutures came out, so they needed €289.39 to correct this, which we sent to the hospital in Faro. 🙂

Pluto who came to us for help just after Christmas needed some more medication, so we paid €50 for that to keep his illness manageable and to help him feel better.

Then Princess had to see a vet, and was told she had issues with her urinary tract. Her human managed the vets bill and the medication, but then was told that special food was needed as a one off for 2 or 3 months, and we decided to order it and pay the €60 directly and have it delivered, so she should be much more comfortable, and happy. 🙂

Sasha ran out of her house on February the 9th and was hit by a car. Sadly this left her with a badly broken leg, and her owner with a large bill of €714, and several smaller bills. We at Buddy's Legacy were able to help, by paying €300 towards her main operation. I have been told Sasha is recovering well from her operation. 🙂

In February, we had a total of €946 in donations, with €1298.38 being spent on bills.

Spider is a very cute young small dog, and he took a painful tumble downstairs and broke his leg! The cost to operate was between €800 and €900, and his owner couldn't afford it, but sadly we couldn't afford it either. But between us, the owner of Spider and the vets we decided we could immobilise the leg, and allow it the best chance at healing which was a much cheaper opion, and certainly better than doing nothing. So we paid for that to be done. 🙂

We had a quiet month in March, which allowed us to regain some of the losses from January and February. We had €561 donated, and some of that was a special donation from a good friend of Buddy's Legacy to help with the upcoming 1 year anniversary of our beloved Buddy going over Rainbow Bridge.

We had outgoings of €131.72 in March. So in total for the 3 months we had a deficit of €328.43.

We hope more people get involved with Teaming, as that is €1 a month from every person who signs up, and we would love enough to pay Pluto's medication every month for as long as he needs us to. We do need more regular payments so we can help more. Please share, but also please use the INVITE button on the Facebook group to invite all of your friends, so that we can continue the good work in Buddy's name.
