Buddy's Legacy

2 Year Update

21 Month Update

18 Month Update

Posted 5th April 2025

Mia is a cat who needed some medication. Her owner lives a humble life with no excess and couldn't afford the medication, so we paid 23 euros for it. Sadly I was later informed that Mia didn't make it, and she went over the Rainbow Bridge. πŸ™

Tou Tou, who was treated last year for his teeth and needed a heart exam had 70.40 euros outstanding on his account so we paid this for him, and hope he feels better.

Kikas is a dog who is 7 years old who appeared with severe anaemia, Leukocytosis and Hyperbilirubinemia, following some days of anorexia and vulvar hemorrhage. She underwent hospitalization of 3 days and a blood transfusion. Due to financial constraints we were not able to explore the etiology of the anaemia, but it is believed to be and immune mediated anaemia. She had a bill of 104.20 for the tests and she had some treatment, and she will need further testing, so she will be an ongoing case for us for a while.

Rabitcho is a cat who had some health issues, and the owner needed urgent care, and couldn't afford it, so we paid 120 euros for the appointment, blood tests and a heart exam.

Kiko and Nina who live together both needed continuous treatments from the last update, Kiko has a lump on the head which needed attending to and sending away for tests, and Nina needed medication, so we paid 127.40 for this, then another 38.40 for Nina

Chloe sadly despite being a young dog has heart problems, and her owner was just managing the cost of the tests and medication when a terrible thing happened and Chloe had an incident and ended up with a radio/ulna fracture of the right leg, it was plastered, but did need an operation. The owner asked for help as she was already struggling to manage, so we paid 467 towards this as the owner had managed to raise 400 from friends and family. This proves that together we are stronger.

Poor Lucky has had a stroke, and his owner was told a CAT scan was needed to determine exactly what the best treatment and medication was but Lucky also started having seizures, so she was rushed in to the hospital and kept in for several nights, Sadly Lucky has a cancerous tumour which was pressing on her brain causing the fits, and there is no treatment for her, just treatment to make her more comfortable and have a better quality of life for the time she has left. The bill for this with the kind Association discount we were given was 930.20 plus 67 for Chemotherapy medication, so we settled it all. Sadly despite Lucky going home for a few days and being given every chance she couldn't recover and her last night was 29 January then she was allowed to gently go over Rainbow Bridge with her beloved owner at her side. πŸ™

Kiko was in the group before, and has had some treatment on his teeth and blood tests due to lack of appetite. However his owner found a small lump on his head, and after testing this was found to be cancerous,so Kiko needed a CT scan to check that this hadn't spread, then an operation to remove the lump. Luckily his owner caught it early and asked for help, but the cost for this was 226.23 euros for testing and anaesthesia, then he had to have an operation to remove the cancer so it didn't spread further, so we paid 410.48 euros for that. We then paid for anti-inflammatory medication which was 60 euros, then 255.10 euros for Oncology.

Dandara was attacked by 3 other dogs and she needed emergency treatment for her wounds, but we couldn't afford the entire bill, so we paid 489.50 euros towards it and the vets kindly added a 15% discount so the owners part wasn't too much to pay. We also settled 20 euros for wound aftercare and soon discovered that poor Dandara had dead and decaying tissue around her wound sites. So she was taken back into emergency care and we helped again managing to pay 624.80 plus 4 return trips for wound checks and dressings costing 48 euros.

Magui had eaten something she shouldn't have eaten, and her owner spent all her money trying to help Magui feel better by having the item removed, but Magui was still unwell. She needed a contrast x ray to ensure there was nothing still inside Magui, but it was resolved and Magui is on medication for a few months to help settle the ulcers in her stomach, we paid 317.07 euros.

A dog called Lassie was attacked by some dogs, and had awful injuries which she sadly couldn't survive. We paid 100 euros towards her vet bill.

A Cat called Binky was shot by somebody in her neighbourhood, and despite the vets best efforts she couldn't survive, so she went to sleep peacefully with her family around her. They had already spent all they had on her vets bills, so we paid the final 73.58 euros of the bill.

Chiara had very itchy ears, and then swollen pain painful feet, and the owner didn't have the funds to pay for the vet, so we helped and paid 110.88 euros for her appointment and tests.

Mafaldinha needed some tests to work out if medication was needed due to coughing a lot. The tests were 160 euros, so we paid for it, and hope Mafaldinha feels better as it was discovered he just had a respiratory infection that went away with the treatment he received. πŸ™‚

Sera at just 3 months of age became very unwell, and had to be taken to the hospital as an emergency. Her owners paid everything they had and asked for help in case the bill was higher than they could afford. Sera was at the hospital for a few days on fluids, medication and 24 hour care, but sadly couldn't withstand it all and she went over Rainbow bridge in her sleep, without pain and we paid 90.95 euros. πŸ™

Benny was a young dog and sadly ran out when a door was left open, and he had awful injuries, which his owner couldn't manage. We paid 100 euros towards the bill but sadly he didn't survive. πŸ™

Ruddy needed some tests and some special food, and his owner was paying as much as she could manage, but we paid 64.18 to help with some of it, and we hope Ruddy feels better soon.

Riscus is a cat who needed to have some help with breathing, as he was struggling, so his owner asked for our help. We agreed to help get Riscus into the vet and on Oxygen and paid 141.79 but then we found out he had spent 3 nights in hospital having treatments and care, so we are happy he is well again and we paid the 117 euros for him to be allowed to go home, but need to put our focus on the dogs in the group now.

Gizmo was a cat who needed tests on a lump to see if it was something which needed removal. We paid 80.55 for the tests but when we have a lot of dogs in the group we sadly can't afford too much for cats so we hope all is well.

Cereja (Cherry) had to go to the hospital for breast cancer removal operation, and we paid 502 euros for the scan which sadly did show the cancer, but when she got to the hospital it was found she also had cancer in other areas so we paid 142.75 euros and she was allowed to go home to the loving arms of her owner, with medication to make her more comfortable and she sadly went over the Rainbow Bridge πŸ™

Cappuccino was hit by a car in April 2024 and had 2 broken legs. Sadly the bill to help him was over 1700 euros. His owner didn't know about Buddy's Legacy. πŸ™ Finally in February he was told about us and asked for help, and we paid 67.64 euros for him to return to the vet and have x-rays to see how the time passed had affected him. The bill to help Cappuccino went up to over 2000 euros as the bones had fused and he needed further interventions after suffering for so long. Another very kind Foundation paid 1700 euros towards this and we settled the remaining 378.25 euros, and the owner paid for extra hospitalisation as Cappuccino had extra issues with his left leg.

Izzie suddenly developed issues with movement and walking, and she couldn't stand properly, so her family took her to the vet and they suggested a TAC scan and a consultation with a neurosurgeon which they knew wouldn't be cheap so they asked us for our help. We paid 410 euros for the scan, and sadly it showed that Izzie needed an operation which would cost over 1000 euros if she was to be able to walk pain free again. She had her operation, and we paid 1006.40 euros for her operation, plus 100 euros for 10 physiotherapy sessions.

Kiko, who is having treatments and testing for the lump removed from his head, Nina who has started vomiting and needs to see the vet. Kiko is going to have to see them anyway so I have agreed Nina should go with him, as she shouldn't be so sick for no reason. We paid Kiko's and Nina's bill which was 277.29 after a kind association discount of 10%.

Nina continued to be very unwell, life threateningly so, as she had very bad stomach issues, and her food just wasn't staying in her stomach, and she had very runny poop, so she went back for more tests, and will need to have a few days of treatments. The tests and medications cost 352.58 and Nina needed special food which was over 60 euros, and paid for privately, then Nina had to go back to the vet a few more times costing 85.23 euros.

Milena was rescued from a very bad situation, and needed all the Tics and Fleas removed and a good bath, then it was discovered she had a large lump underneath, so she went to the vet and they operated to remove this hernia, and we paid 552.30 euros for the operation, and this poor girl started to wag her tail for the first time, with her saviour while she was recovering and resting.

Caguitos is a cat who needed some urgent dental work due to pain and he was crying his mouth was so painful, so we paid 172 euros for that to be done, and we hope he is much more comfortable now.

Lord who was going to the vet for tests was very unwell. His owner couldn't manage it all, and he didn't have a clear diagnosis so he needed more tests, and we paid 295.80 but the vet thinks she has managed to narrow it down to a few possible causes, sadly Bravecto may be a cause. We will know more soon.

Lassie again, from last year, was previously operated on for tumours, which sadly have returned. She saw a vet again, and it was decided she was not a candidate for another surgery, it was considered better as it is slow growing to medicate and keep Lassie comfortable for as long as possible, to enjoy the rest of her life. πŸ™

Layla is a dog who has an appetite, but she can't eat so she must feel pain and doesn't want to eat, her owner tried to open her mouth, as she is already about 7 or 8 years old, it could be a tooth hurting, but she growls when they touch her mouth, so she needed urgent intervention. It turned out she had swelling in her throat, so she has medication and another appointment for next week. We have paid her bill so far, 190.50 and will pay for her bill again when she goes back.

Another Lassie sadly was a Non sterilized bitch, and both mammary chains completely full of nodules (potentially cancer) so we agreed to pay for her operation to both sterilise and remove these lumps, which would then get tested, but sadly when she went to the vet she was not a candidate for the operation as this was clearly cancer and had already spread. So we paid 217.53 for the treatment she had, and she will be more comfortable πŸ™.

We started Buddy's Legacy with one of our intentions to be to sterilise the pets of low income people to help control accidental pregnancies, and also the illness that can come with not being sterilised. However we started to realise quickly that it wouldn't be easy to find the money to do this unless there was a cancer or condition which required it. So to allow us to commence this important work we are very grateful to have received a grant from DPDSAA animal charity which is based in the UK and does focus a lot on helping with the costs of sterilising animals in Portugal. So a huge thank you to them for helping us with this. This has allowed us to start this very important work and we have paid for Max, who broke 2 legs last year and is now fit and well, to be castrated, and his owner is very happy and grateful as she wanted to do it, but couldn't afford to. So thank you DPDSAA, we have started and will continue doing this alongside our other important work! πŸ™‚ You can check out the DPDSAA website here.

And also thank you to Coosje Van Den Boom for adding to our sterilisation budget. πŸ™‚

So far we have paid the following for sterilisation:

Art Auction

We started our April Anniversary Art Auction on the 1st of April, and it will run through all of April to try to raise very important funds for Buddy's Legacy, and April is the sad second Anniversary of his death, so we are trying to make something good from it. We have a lot of amazing people to thank, who have donated their Art work to us.

Thank you so much to:

In total over the last 3 months we spent 9785.52 euros on vets bills.
